Cyber security awareness: How to build safer online habits

A cyber attack is reported in Australia every few minutes. A reminder that even small lapses in online safety can have serious consequences. This Cyber Security Awareness Month, BTC Markets joins the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) and other financial institutions in supporting this year’s theme: “Building our cyber safe culture.”

No matter your experience level, strengthening your online habits is one of the most effective ways to protect your assets and identity.

As our financial lives move online, cybercriminals are using increasingly sophisticated tactics, from fake investment offers to phishing emails and malware. The good news is that staying safe doesn’t require technical expertise. Small actions, done consistently, can make a major difference.

Both Cyber.gov.au and the National Anti-Scam Centre stress three key steps for individuals and businesses alike: keep your software up to date, use strong passphrases, and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Together, these measures form the foundation of cyber resilience.

Keep your software up to date

Outdated software is one of the most common entry points for cyberattacks. Updates contain important patches that fix vulnerabilities hackers exploit. Turning on automatic updates across your phone, computer, and wallet apps helps ensure your defences stay current. As ANZ notes, “outdated software can be a gateway for cyberattacks.”

Use strong, unique passphrases

NAB recommends creating passphrases, long combinations of random words, numbers, and symbols, instead of short, reused passwords. A passphrase such as “CoffeeRiverWindowSun!” is far harder to crack yet easier to remember.

Never share or recycle passwords across platforms and use a password manager to store them securely.

Turn on multi-factor authentication

MFA, sometimes called two-factor authentication, requires you to confirm your identity using a second device or method, such as an authenticator app or biometric scan. This step drastically reduces the risk of unauthorised access, even if someone learns your password. Both NAB and the ACSC highlight MFA as one of the most effective defences available.

Stay alert to scams

Scams often look legitimate at first glance. Criminals may impersonate financial institutions, customer service teams, or even friends, urging quick action. If something feels off, stop and verify before responding. Never click on unexpected links or download attachments from unknown senders. To report suspicious activity, visit Scamwatch or ReportCyber.

NAB’s security guidance also recommends regular data backups, ideally stored securely and tested periodically to ensure they work. Taking a few minutes each month to review your security settings, update passwords, and enable MFA on new accounts helps maintain long-term protection.
