Fraud is not a new issue, but in today's digital economy, it is accelerating faster than ever. As financial systems and investment platforms move online, the opportunities for scammers to deceive individuals and businesses multiply. This International Fraud Awareness Week (17-23 November 2025), BTC Markets is supporting broader public awareness efforts by highlighting practical steps Australians can take to stay secure.
Why fraud awareness matters more than ever
Global losses from fraud exceed US$4.7 trillion annually, according to the ACFE. Many organisations lose around 5% of revenue to fraudulent activity each year.
In Australia, the National Anti-Scam Centre reported more than $2.7 billion in scam losses in 2024. Investment and impersonation scams remain in the most damaging categories. They often target individuals who believe they are engaging with legitimate businesses or trusted brands.
As financial services become increasingly digital, the sophistication of fraudulent tactics grows. Deepfake impersonations, highly targeted phishing, and fake customer-support channels are now common tools criminals use to exploit trust.
Understanding the modern face of fraud
Fraudsters today rely less on brute force and more on psychological manipulation. They create urgency, fear, or false confidence to push victims into making hasty decisions, whether that’s transferring funds, sharing personal information, or downloading malicious files.
Common warning signs include unsolicited offers that promise guaranteed returns, messages that demand immediate payment, and requests to “verify” your account outside an official platform. If something feels off, pause and verify before taking action.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) reminds Australians to adopt a “Stop, Check, and Protect” mindset:
- Stop before clicking on links or sending money.
- Check that the source or website is legitimate.
- Protect yourself by reporting suspicious activity to trusted authorities.
Strengthening your defences
Fraud prevention starts with small, consistent actions. Staying secure doesn’t require technical expertise, just awareness and discipline.
Keeping your software and apps updated ensures that the latest security patches are in place. Using strong, unique passphrases instead of reused passwords adds another layer of protection. And enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) provides an extra safeguard even if your credentials are compromised.
Regularly reviewing your online security settings, updating old passwords, and backing up important data are simple yet powerful steps toward reducing your risk of fraud.
Fraud in the digital-asset ecosystem
Blockchain technology was designed to promote transparency and accountability, yet the digital-asset space still faces fraud-related challenges. The most common include:
- Impersonation scams: fake profiles or websites claiming affiliation with exchanges or influencers.
- Phishing attacks: fraudulent wallet links or airdrop offers designed to steal credentials.
- “Rug pulls”: projects that disappear after attracting investor funds.
Fraudulent actors exploit the same principles of trust that legitimate platforms work hard to earn. That’s why vigilance remains essential. BTC Markets reminds clients that we never guarantee investment returns, and all communications from our team come from verified BTC Markets channels.
