Older Australians lead the next capital wave

Australia’s crypto market is entering a new phase, and older Australians are now driving one of its most significant shifts. Findings from the BTC Markets Investor Study Report (ISR) 2025 show a sharp rise in engagement among investors aged 60 and over, who recorded a 723% increase in average initial deposits and a 93% increase in daily trading activity over the financial year.

These results highlight a structural shift in how retirees and pre-retirees are approaching digital assets. Crypto is now part of broader financial planning and long-term portfolio diversification. Many older Australians are responding to inflationary pressures, low-yield environments, and global market uncertainty by exploring alternative assets that complement traditional holdings.

Caroline Bowler, outgoing CEO of BTC Markets, notes the difference in approach:

“These aren’t speculators chasing the latest trend, they’re retirees with capital, intent and a strategy. What we are seeing is thoughtful, deliberate engagement with digital assets.”

The BTC Markets Investor Study Report (ISR) 2025 shows that older investors enter the market with purpose. Their behaviour is measured and consistent, reflecting disciplined trading patterns and long-term planning. Rather than reacting to short-term movements, they are building resilient portfolios aligned with retirement needs and wealth-preservation goals.

The report also highlights that mid-career Australians aged 25 to 44 remain strong contributors to portfolio growth. However, the 60+ cohort is one of the fastest-growing groups in both capital inflows and trading activities. Their participation challenges long-held assumptions that crypto adoption is primarily driven by younger Australians.

Crypto is now being used across life stages, from early career wealth building to mid-career diversification, to retirement planning. Older Australians are proving to be active participants, leading the next capital wave through strategic, intentional engagement.

As digital assets continue to mature, BTC Markets remains focused on supporting investors with trusted, intuitive tools and transparent insights.
