Phishing alert: Beware of emails impersonating BTC Markets

BTC Markets is aware of fraudulent emails currently circulating that falsely claim to be from us.

The emails use BTC Markets branding and refer to supposed changes to “custody and transfer terms”. Recipients are told they need to review and acknowledge the changes within seven days or risk restrictions being placed on trading and transfers.

These emails are not from BTC Markets. If you receive one, do not click on any links or interact with the message.

How to spot the phishing email

One of the clearest warning signs is the sender’s email address. The phishing email has been sent from a @btcmarkets.org address.

The message also creates a sense of urgency by giving recipients seven days to take action and claiming that trading and transfer activity may otherwise be restricted.

Scammers commonly use familiar branding, professional language, and look-alike domains to make their emails appear legitimate. Even a small difference in an email address or website domain can be easy to miss.

How scammers may have obtained your email address

Receiving an email about a service you use can make the message seem particularly convincing. However, phishing campaigns often cast a wide net, with scammers sending the same message to large numbers of email addresses in the hope that some recipients happen to use the company they are impersonating. Email addresses may also be obtained from unrelated data breaches or other sources. An email like this does not, by itself, mean the sender knows you have a BTC Markets account or that your email address was obtained from BTC Markets. If you’re concerned that your email address may have been exposed in a previous data breach, you can use services such as Have I Been Pwned to check whether it has appeared in known breaches.

What to do if you receive this phishing email

Do not click on any links, reply to the sender, or provide any personal or account information.

Instead, access your account directly through the official BTC Markets website or app. If you’re unsure whether a communication is genuine, contact our Support team using the verified channels available through btcmarkets.net.

BTC Markets will never ask you to:

• Share your password or one-time verification (2FA) codes by email, SMS or messaging apps.
• Move your funds to another wallet or platform to “protect” them.
• Provide your recovery phrase or other sensitive account credentials.
• Install remote access software to resolve an account issue.
